Remembering Jim Gibbons: A Legacy of Leadership and Community Impact

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington is mourning the loss of Jim Gibbons, a dedicated former Councillor, Deputy Reeve, and Mayor of Fergus.  Jim’s contributions to our community were immeasurable, with decades of municipal service and tireless volunteer work that have left an indelible mark on Fergus and the greater Centre Wellington area.

Jim was a true community leader, known for his commitment to improving the lives of those around him. His efforts in local fundraising, community building, and economic development have shaped much of the community we know today. Jim played a pivotal role in initiatives such as the construction of Groves Community Hospital (both old and new), the Grove Hub, the Cataract Trail, and the Grand River Conservation Authority. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Fergus Business Park, a legacy he fought for years to establish.

“Jim was a force to be reckoned with, both in the council chamber and within our community,” said Mayor Watters.  “His vision for a business park, which began in the 1970s, finally came to fruition thanks to his persistence. His legacy will live on in the many projects he helped create and the lives he touched. Jim always led by example, empowering others to take on leadership roles, and his passion for this community was unmatched. I recently had the honor of presenting Jim with the King Charles III Coronation Medal, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the growth and development of our great country. There is truly no one more deserving of this prestigious award than Jim.”

In addition to his municipal service, Jim was deeply involved in the Rotary Club of Fergus-Elora, where he held numerous leadership positions, including President, Past President, and Community Service Director. His commitment to the community extended beyond his political and business roles—Jim was a generous supporter of countless causes, often providing goods, services, and his personal time to help others.

Jim was also a successful business owner, operating the Fergus Canadian Tire on St. Andrew Street West for many years, where he became a familiar face in the community. He employed many residents and was known for his generosity and willingness to support local causes.

“Jim’s impact on our community can be seen everywhere you look,” said Dan Wilson, Chief Administrative Officer of Centre Wellington. “From his leadership in economic development to his volunteer efforts, he was always ready to lend a hand and push for progress. He set a high standard for what it means to serve this community, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and work with him.  I have fond memories of Jim from his time as the owner of the Canadian Tire in downtown Fergus. As a child, I bought my first pair of hockey skates and a stick from him. He will be greatly missed."

Jim’s legacy is one of dedication, service, and leadership. His work has created lasting change in Centre Wellington, and his contributions will continue to benefit the community for generations to come.

In honor of Jim Gibbons and his invaluable contributions to our community, Township flags will be flown at half-mast.
